The NCSC published version 4.0 of the Cyber Assessment Framework on 6 August 2025. UK NIS regulators and critical infrastructure operators use the CAF to assess essential services. Version 4.0 adds a contributing outcome on understanding the threat, a section on secure software development and maintenance, stronger security monitoring and threat hunting indicators, and AI related risk. Operators regulated under the NIS Regulations 2018 have to expect regulators to move assessments to v4.0 in the following assessment cycles.
