SOLAS and MARPOL: mandatory reporting of containers lost at sea

Container loss reporting becomes mandatory · Resolution MSC.550(108) (SOLAS chapter V) and MEPC.384(81) (MARPOL Protocol I) · IMO

Maritime International Law

From 1 January 2026 the master of a ship that loses containers overboard must report the loss to ships in the vicinity, the nearest coastal State and the flag State, including position, number of containers and whether they hold dangerous goods. Drifting containers sighted must also be reported. Flag States pass the data to IMO. The change applies to all ships carrying containers, not only container ships.
