Maritime International Guidance

MSC 111 (13 to 22 May 2026) adopted the first IMO Code for remotely controlled and autonomous ships, applying on a voluntary basis from 1 July 2026 to cargo ships under SOLAS chapter I. It is goal-based and covers design, remote operation centres, connectivity and cyber security, and crewing. An experience-building phase follows; work on a mandatory code is planned from 2028, with adoption expected by 1 July 2030 and entry into force on 1 January 2032.
