Amendments adopted at MEPC 80 (7 July 2023) entered into force on 1 February 2025. They replace the form of the Ballast Water Record Book in appendix II of the BWM Convention and allow an electronic record book approved by the flag administration in place of the paper book. The D-2 discharge standard has applied to all ships since 8 September 2024, so port State control now checks both the treatment system and the record keeping. Further BWM amendments approved at MEPC 84 are due for adoption at MEPC 85 in December 2026.
