FuelEU Maritime: GHG intensity limit applies

Regulation applies to ships above 5,000 GT · Regulation (EU) 2023/1805 · European Commission and EMSA

Maritime EU Law

FuelEU Maritime limits the yearly average greenhouse gas intensity of energy used on board ships above 5,000 GT calling at EU/EEA ports, regardless of flag. From 1 January 2025 the limit is 2% below the 2020 reference value of 91.16 gCO2e/MJ, counting 100% of energy used between EU ports and 50% on voyages to or from third countries. Companies had to submit a monitoring plan by 31 August 2024. Each ship needs a FuelEU document of compliance by 30 June of the following year; a compliance deficit costs a penalty per tonne of VLSFO equivalent.
